Unpaid Employee Overview
Overview:
Unpaid appointment types are based on the different affiliations individuals have with the university, and include retirees, emeritus faculty, campus associate organizations members, visiting faculty, and visiting researchers.
Depending on the affiliation or type of unpaid appointment, these individuals may be granted access to network systems and other campus services such as use of the library, parking, and use of the Recreation Center.
1. Unpaid Appointment Types
- Campus Associate How to appoint
Examples include: University Bookstore, UO Foundation, Oregon Daily Emerald, Religious Directors Association, Greek Life, and ASUO Legal Services. Human Resources occasionally grants associate status to individuals associated with a department. These affiliations should be time limited, and renewed as needed.
- Courtesy How to appoint
Courtesy appointments are granted to faculty and researchers who are spending time on the UO campus, but not receiving compensation through payroll. They may be doing research, assisting on a project, or have another reason for being invited to spend time on campus. Human Resources approves these appointments. These affiliations are time limited, and renewed as needed.
- Retirees How to appoint
Retirees may retain certain campus privileges, such as access to the library, the campus network, and discount tickets to sporting events. At the point that the employee ceases being a paid faculty member, the job and deductions are terminated. A new primary job is established for the retiree appointment using the XX Eclass.
When retired unclassifed employees wish to return to the university for post-retirement work, a new primary paid position is established for the post-retirement appointment. The unpaid position now becomes the secondary position. (See Human Resources Post Retirement Appointments, Tenure Reduction Program.)
Please note that there are two different unpaid appointment position categories for unclassified Officers of Instruction and Officers of Research, based on whether or not the retiree has been granted emeritus status. There is a third unpaid appointment category for Officers of Administration.
BUOXRO - Officers of Administration
BUOXRT - Officers of Instruction and Officers of Research (without emeritus status)
BUOXEM - Officers of Instruction and Officers of Research (with emeritus status)
- Emeritus How to appoint
Emeritus are retired faculty who have been granted emeritus status by the Provost's Office.
At the point that the employee ceases being a paid faculty member, the regular position and payroll deductions are terminated. A new primary job is established for the emeritus appointment using the XX Eclass. If the emeritus faculty wishes to return to the university for post-retirement work, a new primary position is established for the post-retirement appointment and the emeritus job becomes the secondary position.
- Postdoctoral Fellows How to appoint
- They are not employees of the university and are paid by external funding.
